32 new trains for the Metropolis and the region. GZM and the Silesian Voivodeship are planning a joint purchase of the trains.

The Upper Silesian-Zagłębie Metropolis and the Marshal's Office of the Silesian Voivodeship are seeking to acquire a total of 32 modern trains – Electric Multiple Units (EMUs). Both institutions have submitted applications to the Centre for EU Transport Projects for co-financing the purchase of the trains. A decision will be made no earlier than the second half of the year.

The basic order covers 32 vehicles: 16 for the GZM Metropolis and 16 for the Silesian Voivodeship. The procedure also includes an option to purchase an additional 20 trains – 10 for each party. A joint procurement not only means a larger investment scale but also the opportunity to obtain better pricing and attract the interest of more rolling stock manufacturers.

"The construction of the Metrorail is one of GZM's key projects," says Kazimierz Karolczak, chairman of the board of the Upper Silesian-Zagłębie Metropolis. "We want to create a modern, reliable, and accessible rail system that will become a real alternative to cars and a transportation link for the entire Metropolis." New rolling stock is the foundation of this change – without it, frequent, comfortable, and punctual connections are impossible,” he adds.

This is GZM's first attempt to purchase trains in its eight-year history. Until now, the Transport GZM network has only included buses, trolleybuses, and trams. This totals approximately 1,900 vehicles. Year after year, the metropolitan area places increasing emphasis on supplementing the system with rail transport. Until now, GZM has focused on financing additional rail connections and increasing tariff integration with the railways. Every 30-day ticket holder can now also use the trains.

According to the plan, the first trains for GZM could arrive in the region in the second quarter of 2029. As part of the Metrorail project, all new rolling stock is scheduled to be in service by December 2029, when the new timetable comes into effect.

The completion of the basic contract is conditional on securing funding through the Centre for EU Transport Projects competition. The results of the recruitment process, according to schedule, should be announced in the second half of this year.

Announcement of the competition for the Metrokolei operator

The condition for applying for funding for the purchase of rolling stock is the publication of a notice of intent to conduct a tender for the provision of passenger rail services in the GZM area. According to the announcement, a public procurement contract for the operator who will operate Metrokolei from 2029 will be announced in February 2027.

If GZM purchases its own trains, the operator will receive them on a free-of-charge basis and will be responsible for their operation (including drivers and essential staff). Publication of this information one year in advance is required by law to maintain the principles of competitiveness and transparency and to enable operators to prepare for the tender. Furthermore, this ensures that the necessary conditions for obtaining a positive evaluation of the Funding Application submitted to the Central Railway Inspectorate (CUPT) for co-financing the purchase of rolling stock are met.

Comfort, Accessibility, and Modern Solutions

The new Electric Multiple Units will offer a high standard of travel. Onboard amenities include air conditioning, power outlets, bicycle storage, a family zone, an AED defibrillator, and a modern Passenger Information System. Each train will be equipped with two toilets, including one adapted for people with disabilities.

The vehicles will reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h and accommodate at least 380 passengers, including a minimum of 185 in permanent seats.

Particular attention has been paid to accessibility for people with disabilities – the trains will be equipped with features such as an induction loop, clearly marked wheelchair doors and floor pictograms, contrasting seat grab bars, and safe spaces for wheelchairs. Furthermore, special color-coded areas will be provided, including: for seniors, similar to Transport GZM.

Additionally, the vehicles will be equipped with a Passenger Counting System, and Transport GZM ticket validators will be installed on GZM trains, similar to those installed on buses, trams, and trolleybuses, facilitating the integration of rail with other public transport modes in the Metropolis.
